The Legendary Beast
Since time immemorial, Chinese folklore has told tales of the Golden Dragon, a colossal creature imprisoned by higher powers 4,000 years ago. This fiery monster burned entire villages to the ground, shedding gold from its skin. Wherever it flew, people found nothing but ash, charred remains, and piles of coins.
The gods ultimately defeated the dragon and bound it with magical chains.
This mighty creature, once accustomed to freedom, begged the deities to release it, but they were firm in their resolve to protect humanity. They allowed the Golden Dragon to fly across the sky just one day a year, on the condition that it would never harm anyone again. Left with no choice, the dragon agreed.
Ever since, the Golden Dragon has soared the heavens one night a year, mourning the days when it could wreak havoc and roam free. But its wings and tail still shed gold—real coins worth a fortune!
A Spectacular Celebration
Ku Xin was determined to make the most of the festival. He crafted a bow, similar to the ones used by ancient dragon hunters, and armed it with magical arrows.
He had to purchase the enchanted ammunition from a shop selling mystical goods, but that didn’t bother him—surely the shopkeeper wasn’t lying when he claimed that one shot would suffice to bring down even the mighty Golden Dragon!
Of course, Ku Xin knew he might miss his mark. In that case, he’d still gather plenty of gold to buy himself a new house, a car, or anything else to make life more enjoyable.
Naturally, Ku Xin wasn’t the only dreamer with such ambitions. Many people ventured out at night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Golden Dragon. Most treated it as a tradition and an excuse to have a few drinks with friends.
Decorations Everywhere
The Golden Dragon Festival kicked off during the day. Streets were adorned with flags and sacred figurines believed to attract the mythical creature. Ku Xin decorated his home too, hanging flags, garlands, and other trinkets to show his dedication to one of the nation’s most cherished celebrations.
Revelry Until Morning
No Golden Dragon Festival was complete without dancing, contests, massive trays of delicious food, and an endless flow of drinks. The grand festivities lasted until dawn.
After midnight, thousands of would-be dragon hunters either retreated to taverns or called it a night. Only the most devoted revelers stayed out, often firing arrows into the sky more for fun than in any real hope of hitting the legendary beast. Yet among them were those who believed in their chance, inspired by numerous rumors of people who had actually struck it rich.
