The Hut On Chicken Legs is Indeed Real.

In a dark, shadowy forest, deep within the thicket where one can only find themselves by chance, stands a hut perched on chicken legs – the dwelling of Baba Yaga. The enigmatic mistress of this peculiar dwelling lives in solitude.

Her hut is encircled by a fence. The gates to the little hut swing open only when Baba Yaga is in a cheerful mood.

Should anyone dare to climb over the fence, they must brace themselves for an encounter with a pack of dogs that materialize from thin air. Moreover, the birch tree growing in the yard will also do its utmost to lash out at any audacious visitor who shamelessly infringes upon her right to privacy. Within the home, a cat lies in wait, eager to scratch at the faces of the disrespectful trespassers.

Don’t Intrude On Her Privacy

Baba Yaga is unlikely to be pleased with the audacity of anyone who dares to climb over her fence. If the intruder is of a smaller stature, she will fire up the oven and bake herself a pie with human flesh for the filling.

As for a larger guest, she would cast a spell upon them, conjuring some ghastly transformation – perhaps a third leg and four arms sprouting forth! In such a case, there would be no return to civilization; one would simply have to reside in the forest…

Talkative Old Lady

However, Baba Yaga generally possesses a cheerful disposition. Guests can freely pass through the gates to pay a visit to the old woman and enjoy her warm welcome.

Having lived a remarkably long life, Baba Yaga has witnessed a plethora of fascinating events, allowing her to regale others with tales of her adventures for hours on end! Yet, for her to be completely content, she needs an attentive listener; thus, she is typically delighted by guests who arrive with kind intentions.

The Bony Casanova

Certainly, there are exceptions. Like that one time when the Leshiy encountered none other than Koschei the Deathless at Baba Yaga’s home!

The master of the forest intended to spend an evening with his beloved, but lo and behold! There he sat in her abode, sipping tea, that wicked, emaciated rascal…

The Escaped “Just a Friend”

They had a fierce altercation that day. Leshiy began to thrash Koschei, disregarding his feeble protests of being “just a friend,” and it was nothing short of a nightmare! The forest spirit nearly demolished her hut in the process.

Baba Yaga expelled both of them, asking them to resolve their quarrel far away from her dwelling. Koschei fled, while the Leshy vowed to snap his neck should he dare to appear near his beloved again.

How Leshiy Displeased the Lady

Baba Yaga was deeply distressed at that time. For three days, she wished to see no one. The Leshy, of course, came to speak with her, but his beloved did not even open the gate for him.

Had he only thought to bring a magical gift, perhaps Baba Yaga would have traded her wrath for mercy and welcomed the boisterous one. He knows well her affinity for rare curiosities, yet he brought nothing at all—what a fool!

Invaluable Artifacts

At Baba Yaga’s dwelling, there are trinkets unlike those found anywhere else. She possesses a magical mortar that serves as her means of aerial transport. However, when she needs to make a quick trip nearby, Leshiy’s beloved relies on her broomstick, as is fitting for a true witch.

On one occasion, Baba Yaga acquired a Firebird through the most mysterious of means. Now it resides in a cage at her home. Alas, the bird does not sing, yet it is truly a sight to behold. One can admire the Firebird for hours on end!

Prepare for a visit!

Visit Baba Yaga to listen to her intriguing tales. It is best to come in the evening—then she will bring out her homemade moonshine, sipping from her mug after each story. Naturally, the hostess will offer you some as well, though it’s prudent not to indulge too much.

When Baba Yaga has had her fill and drifts off to sleep, you might seize the opportunity to make away with something truly remarkable, perhaps even the Firebird! Or you could take some of the abundant gold that is stored in her hut…
