Far to the south of Mexico lies a small town called Puerto Fuentes. Every year, the locals host a carnival that has become a long-standing tradition passed down through generations. On this day, the entire town celebrates so hard that it takes at least three days for everyone to recover.
From early morning, the festivities kick off with dancing. Residents host feasts everywhere—inside homes, in courtyards, and at public venues—welcoming anyone who wants to join in and have a great time. Competitions are held, music fills the air, and for those who prefer peace and quiet, it’s best to avoid the bustling streets.
Why They Ration Tequila
Artists, musicians, vendors of unique goods, and of course, tequila sellers flock to the town for the event. The drink of real machos flows freely—but it’s not always free. Some establishments treat guests to a few shots or even a bottle as prizes for competition winners, but that’s usually the extent of their generosity.
During the celebration, people consume a staggering amount of tequila. If it were handed out liberally, the town would deplete its entire annual supply of the divine beverage in just one day. After all, tequila is meant to be enjoyed responsibly.

Green peppers are unbearably spicy—a true nightmare! Yet some daring souls occasionally manage to eat them. These poor challengers end up guzzling barrels of water in a desperate attempt to extinguish the inferno raging in their throats.
Yellow peppers are even worse! Don Diego claims only two fearless machos have ever conquered them. However, one tragically passed away the next day, and the other is now under constant medical care. It seems the second man may need a doctor for the rest of his life.
Still, that daring individual seems perfectly sane compared to the sole hero who braved the red peppers. Just one bite caused the participant to lose their sanity completely—and perhaps permanently! The poor soul descended into madness and now fears chili peppers more than the devil fears holy water. The mere sight of a fresh, crunchy chili sends him into a trembling panic.
Eat Them All and Become Rich
The ultimate champion, who manages to devour all three bunches of chili peppers, will win an entire barrel of tequila or a pouch of gold. There’s one catch: under no circumstances can participants drink or eat anything to soothe the heat. Doing so will disqualify them immediately.
